เกาะดอนโพธิ์ ดินเเดนเเห่งศรัทธา อยู่ไม่ไกลจากศาลเจ้าปู่อือลือ เป็นอีกหนึ่งสถานที่ที่ถือว่า เป็นดินแดนศักดิ์สิทธิ์ สถานที่แห่งนี้ตั้งโดดเด่นอยู่กลางน้ำ เชื่อกันว่า เกาะดอนโพธิ์ คือสถานที่ที่พญานาคปู่อือลือมักจะมาปฏิบัติธรรม เพราะเป็นเกาะที่เงียบสงบ มีต้นไม้และมีน้ำล้อมรอบบรรยากาศเย็นสบาย ซึ่งนักท่องเที่ยว หลังลงมาจากถ้ำนาคา ก็จะแวะเวียนเข้ามากราบไหว้รูปปั้นปู่อือลือ ที่อยู่ใต้ต้นโพธิ์พร้อมกับขอพรเพื่อความเป็นสิริมงคล และขอโชคลาภก่อนเดินทางกลับ
ตามตำนานปู่อือลือที่ข้องเกี่ยวกับบึงโขงหลงนั้น เชื่อว่า เกิดจากการล่มเมืองของพญานาค ซึ่งเกิดจากความรักที่ไม่สมหวังระหว่างพญานาคกับมนุษย์ ทำให้เมืองที่เจริญรุ่งเรืองล่มสลาย บริเวณแห่งนี้เดิมเป็นที่ตั้งเมือง ชื่อ รัตพานคร มี พระอือลือราชา เป็นผู้ครองนคร มเหสีชื่อ นางแก้วกัลยา มีพระธิดาชื่อ พระนางเขียวคำ ต่อมาได้อภิเษกสมรสกับพระเจ้าสามพันตา มีพระโอรสชื่อ เจ้าชายฟ้ารุ่ง ซึ่งเป็นผู้ที่มีความเฉลียวฉลาด มีความรอบรู้ และมีรูปงามด้วย ขณะประสูติมีท้องฟ้าสว่างไสว ต่อมาได้อภิเษกสมรสกับ นาครินทรานี ซึ่งเป็นพระธิดาของพญานาคราชแห่งเมืองบาดาล ที่แปลงกายเป็นมนุษย์ การอภิเษกสมรสจัดกันอย่างมโหฬาร ทั้งเมืองบาดาล และเมืองมนุษย์ (รัตพานคร) ทำอยู่ 7 วัน 7 คืน เพื่อเป็นการสร้างสัมพันธไมตรีระหว่างพญานาคราช กับ พระเจ้าอือลือราชา ในโอกาสนี้ด้วย ทั้งสองอยู่กินกันมาเป็นเวลา 3 ปี ก็ไม่สามารถจะมีผู้สืบสายสกุลได้ (เพราะธาตุมนุษย์กับนาค) จึงทำให้เกิดความเศร้าโศกเสียใจกับทั้งสอง ต่อมาเจ้าหญิงนาครินทรานี ล้มป่วยลง ทำให้ร่างกายของนางที่เป็นมนุษย์กลายเป็นนาคตามเดิม โดยข่าวนี้ได้แพร่สะพัดออกไปทั่วกรุงรัตพานคร และถึงแม้นางจะร่ายมนตร์กลับเป็นมนุษย์ ประชาชนและพระเจ้าอือลือก็ไม่พอใจ จึงได้ขับไล่นางนาครินทรานีกลับสู่เมืองบาดาลดังเดิม โดยได้แจ้งให้พญานาคราชมารับตัวกลับ ก่อนกลับพญานาคราช ได้ขอเครื่องกกุธภัณฑ์ของตระกูลคืน แต่พระเจ้าอือลือราชาไม่สามารถคืนให้ได้ เนื่องจากนำไปแปรสภาพเป็นอย่างอื่น ทำให้พญานาคราชกริ้วมาก และประกาศว่าจะทำลายเมืองรัตพานคร และจะเหลือเอาไว้เพียง 3 วัดเท่านั้น หลังจากพญานาคกลับไป ในตอนกลางคืน พญานาคราชได้ยกไพร่พลมาถล่มเมืองรัตพานคร และประชาชนก็ไม่มีใครรอดพ้นจากฤทธิ์นาคได้ พอนางนาครินทรานีทราบข่าว ก็ขึ้นมาตามหาเจ้าชายฟ้ารุ่ง จนถึงแม่น้ำสงครามก็ไม่พบ จึงกลับเมืองบาดาล เมืองรัตพานครได้ถล่มเป็น "บึงหลงของ" ต่อมานานเข้าคำพูดก็กลายเป็นโขงหลง และวัดที่เหลือ 3 วัด ก็คือ วัดดอนแก้ว (วัดแก้วฟ้า) วัดดอนโพธิ์ (วัดโพธิสัตว์) และ วัดดอนสวรรค์ (วัดแดนสวรรค์) ทางที่นางนาครินทรานีตามหาเจ้าชายฟ้ารุ่ง คือ ห้วยน้ำเมา (เมารัก) ส่วนพระอือลือราชา ไม่ได้สิ้นพระชนม์ไปกับเหตุการณ์นี้ด้วย แต่ถูกพระยานาคราชจับตัวไว้ พร้อมกับสาปให้พระอือลือราชากลายร่างเป็นนาค เฝ้าอยู่ในบึงโขงหลงชั่วนิรันดร์ จนกว่าจะมีเมืองเกิดใหม่ในดินแดนแห่งนี้ จึงจะล้างคำสาปของพระยานาคราชได้
