Wat Phra Si Ratana Mahathat, also known as Wat Phra Borom That Mueang Chaliang or Wat Phra Prang, is located about 3 kilometers southeast of the old city walls of Sri Satchanalai. It is a large ancient site and a royal temple classified as a Rajavhoravihan. Key historical features within the temple include:
Central Prang: Made of sandstone and plaster, this structure is in the Ayutthaya architectural style. In front of the prang, there is a staircase leading to a niche. The interior walls of the prang show traces of mural paintings that have largely faded. In front of the prang is a vihara housing a large Buddha image in the Mara Victory posture, and to the right is a beautifully crafted stucco Buddha image in the walking posture.
Temple Walls: The walls are constructed of large stone blocks and circular platforms, forming a rectangular shape, 60 meters wide and 90 meters long. Above the entrance arch is a structure resembling a roof peak, with a stucco representation of the face of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara above it.
Phra That Mue Tao: Located behind the central prang outside the inner wall, this structure is a Mon-style chedi. During excavation in 1992, gold ornaments were found at the top of the chedi.
Mondop Phra Attharot: Located behind the Phra That Mue Tao, this was originally a mondop with four seated Buddha images. It has since been restored and modified. Inside the niche, there is a standing Buddha image. Originally, the mondop was roofed with terracotta tiles.
Vihara of the Two Brothers: Located to the left of the Mondop Phra Attharot, this vihara is made of sandstone and houses two Buddha images in the Mara Victory posture on a platform. Archaeological excavations revealed that the base of the Vihara was built on top of an earlier brick structure, and a footprint of Buddha was discovered on the right side of the vihara.
Bot: Positioned in front of the vihara, the bot has been fully restored and constructed over the original bot.
Kutith Phra Ruang Phra Lue: Also known as Sala Phra Ruang Phra Lue, it is a square-based mondop with a four-tiered brick roof. Inside, there is a statue of Phra Ruang Phra Lue (replica).
