เป็นพระธาตุศักดิ์สิทธิ์สมัยอาณาจักรขอมเรืองอำนาจ ตั้งอยู่ตำบลหนองนาคำ อ.เมือง จ.อุดรธานี เดิมเป็นที่บรรจุอัฐิพระอรหันต์ พร้อมมีการบรรจุพระพุทธรูปทองคำไว้ข้างใน ปัจจุบันพระธาตุโพนทองได้ทำการบูรณะซ่อมแซมใหม่ โดยเทศบาลตำบลหนองบัว อ.เมือง จ.อุดรธานี ได้จัดสรรงบประมาณเพื่อปรับปรุงภูมิทัศน์โดยรอบ พระธาตุโพนทอง เป็นที่สักการบูชาของชาวขอม ในสมัยนั้น ถือเป็น "วัด" ที่มีความสำคัญ เนื่องจากมีพระพุทธรูปที่โดดเด่นและสวยงามอยู่หลายองค์ มีตำนานเล่าขานว่า สมัยพุทธกาล มีพระอรหันต์ จำนวน 8 รูป เดินทางมุ่งหน้าไปกราบนมัสการอัฐิธาตุ พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า ยัง "ภูกำพร้า" (พระธาตุพนม) อ.พระธาตุพนม จ.นครพนม หลังจากที่เดินทาง กลับมา เกิดอาการอาพาธหนัก ท่านรู้ว่า ตนเองจะมรณภาพ จึงได้ปักกลดนั่งสมาธิและได้ดับขันธ์ปรินิพพาน ณ บริเวณที่ก่อตั้งพระธาตุ โพนทองแห่งนี้ หลังจากที่พระอรหันต์ ดับขันธปรินิพพาน ได้จัดพิธีฌาปนกิจพร้อมนำอัฐิบรรจุเอาไว้ในพระธาตุ โดยคน สมัยก่อน เคารพและศรัทธาในศาสนาพุทธเป็นอย่างมาก เจ้าเมืองในแต่ละที่ จะเดินทางมาร่วมทำบุญ และก่อสร้าง "องค์พระธาตุ" เพื่อบรรจุอัฐิของพระอรหันต์ที่ปรินิพพาน โดยได้นำเอาพระพุทธรูปทองคำ เครื่องทองสัมฤทธิ์ และของมีค่าต่างๆ นำมาบรรจุไว้ในพระธาตุ โดยใช้เวลาในการก่อสร้างเพียง 7 วัน นอกจากนี้ในบริเวณใกล้เคียง ยังได้ก่อสร้างองค์พระธาตุเล็กไว้อีก 2 องค์ ทางทิศตะวันตก ชาวขอมที่อาศัยอยู่ในละแวกนั้น ต่างพากันตั้งชื่อองค์พระธาตุที่บรรจุอัฐิพระอรหันต์ ว่า "พระธาตุโพนทอง" มีความหมายว่า "พระธาตุที่เนินทองคำสูง"
